Since October is the month when talk turns to all things spooky, it's the perfect time to highlight a few mysterious attractions that would be interesting to visit, especially for tweens and teens. Each is known for some scientific phenomenon or claims to be haunted, and all are popular with tourists. Best suited for children at least age 10 and up, you can visit any time of the year. As you will see below, they also happen to be located near some great vacation spots. This post was updated October, 2020 1. The Oregon Vortex and the House of Mystery, Gold Hill, Oregon. Several years ago, we passed through Gold Hill on our way to Crater Lake National Park, so of course, my kids thought it would be a cool place to stop. Various demonstrations take place in the slanted house which seem to defy gravity, such as balls rolling uphill and unexplained differences in height when standing in the same spots. You really have to see it for yourself to believe it. I must admit that being in that crooked house did make me feel a bit dizzy after we finally left the grounds so enter at your own risk.
2. Winchester Mystery House, San Jose, California. Visit the Winchester House if you are up for ghost stories while touring over 100 rooms in the mansion. You’ll see staircases that lead to nowhere, secret passageways and doors that open to blank walls. Next time you are vacationing in the San Francisco area, be sure to stop by. 3. Eastern State Penitentiary, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I consider this highly ranked tourist attraction as the East Coast version of the famous Alcatraz. It opened in 1829, and in the early days people came just to see this impressive architectural structure. An audio tour, The Voices of Eastern State, is included in the admission price. Listen to actual wardens and prisoners while touring the facility. The penitentiary has been featured on shows like Ghost Hunters and the Travel Channel’s Ghost Adventures, and is widely studied for paranormal activity. We had a chance to visit in 2015 (read more at Why You Should Visit Eastern State Penitentiary), and I have to say that after touring in the daylight, I'm not sure I'm brave enough for the Terror Behind the Walls that takes place in the fall. 4. The Stanley Hotel, Estes Park, Colorado. If you happen to be vacationing at nearby Rocky Mountain National Park, plan to visit The Stanley Hotel, the hotel that inspired the movie “The Shining.” Learn about the history of the hotel as well as all the paranormal happenings while taking the Stanley Tour or, even better, the Night Ghost Tour. You don’t have to be a guest of the hotel to book a tour. 5. Key West, Florida. Considered by many to be one of America's most haunted cities, Key West is filled with a fascinating history that is fun to explore after dark. If you dare, take a ghost tour to see firsthand many of the sites where tragic deaths and haunted happenings took place.
