Enjoy a Wine Tasting Getaway and More in California’s Temecula Valley

Southern California always surprises me with something new to discover each time I visit. Most recently, I learned about other California wine regions besides Napa and Sonoma, with the Temecula Valley home to 40+ wineries. With travel time from the San Diego airport just over an hour, and a similar drive from other cities and towns in Southern California, it is ideal for an easy day trip or overnight stay.

The wineries may not have the recognition of those in Napa and Sonoma, but the variety we found clustered on the way to our delightful stay at Ponte Vineyard Inn was impressive. Our visit on a sunny and mild February day made it easy to linger outside. Keep reading to learn how to enjoy a wine tasting getaway and more in California’s Temecula Valley.

What To Expect When Visiting Temecula

Old Town Temecula was our first stop upon arrival in the area. Picture a main street with a bit of western flair, along with unique shops, a bit of history, and delicious restaurants. The town’s rich history is reflected throughout and includes artifacts on display at the historic Hotel Temecula. Visitors can mine for gems, shop for souvenirs inside the Old Town Temecula Mining Co. & Mercantile, or enjoy a sweet treat.

The patio at the Small Barn restaurant is an ideal spot to enjoy a delicious Barn Burger while relaxing in the Southern California sun. Parts of the building have been preserved to honor the history of one of Temecula’s first settlers who originally lived at the site.

In less than 20 minutes from Old Town Temecula we were at our destination for the afternoon/evening, the Ponte Vineyard Inn. The short drive down Rancho California Road took us past numerous, picturesque wineries, including Truffle Pig Winery and Vineyards and Europa Village.

Our Stay at Ponte Vineyard Inn

Our wine tasting getaway in California’s Temecula Valley began with a refreshing glass of Ponte Winery Bubbly Rosé upon arrival, a perfect way to start our afternoon of wine tasting. It was a moment of Zen to step out on the patio of our room with a glass of bubbly and vineyard views with a mountain backdrop. The Spanish-style inn offers a variety of room configurations that include amenities like bathrobes and slippers along with a patio or balcony.

Guests at the Ponte Vineyard Inn will find beautifully landscaped grounds with outdoor seating areas, a large pool and jacuzzi, and a lovely pathway to the wine tasting area. It was a period of dormancy for the vines during our winter visit, so it would be fun to go back in September when everything is green and the grapes ripening.

Ponte considers itself a small, boutique producer compared to others in California, producing everything from classic wines like Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Grigio, to blends like the Super T, a full-bodied red. We were signed up to learn more on a vineyard tour; unfortunately, it was cancelled due to heavy rains before our visit.

Our stay included a complimentary wine tasting, which gave us a chance to try 6 wines which we enjoyed both in the Tasting Room and on the outdoor deck area. Two favorites stand out to me, including the Arneis 2025, described as a full-bodied white, and the Vernaccia Nera 2024, a sparkling red. A tasting flight at nearby Bottaia Winery was also included with our booking.

Although we choose to stay and enjoy a blue-sky afternoon and evening at the inn, it would be easy to wine hop with so many wineries in close proximity. Visit Temecula Valley outlines 3 wine trails to explore plus “Wineries Off the Beaten Path”—the Rancho California Wine Trail, the Calle Contento Wine Trail, and the De Portola Wine Trail.

Each will lead visitors to a cluster of wineries, with the largest concentration of roughly 20 wineries off of Rancho California Road. Use their website to filter by wine type, availability of music, and other amenities. Take advantage of a tour or wine trolley and leave the driving to someone else.

With almost 50 distinctive California wineries to explore, it’s hard to know which ones to try. Here is a small glimpse of the experiences found at specific Temecula Valley wineries:

  • Briar Rose Winery offers a luxury picnic package.
  • Europa Village is home to Spanish Bolero, Italian Vienza, and the French-inspired C’est La Vie.
  • Ponte Vineyard Inn offers the Ponte Stay, Taste & Tour Package that includes a guided tour, wine tasting and restaurant credit.
  • Thornton Winery hosts a Champagne Jazz Concert Series on select dates May – October.
  • Carter Estate Winery and Resort offers a Horse & Carriage Package that includes a 2-hour ride through the vineyards and a Hot Air Balloon Package.
  • South Coast Winery Resort & Spa is ideal if you are looking for a relaxing day at the Grapeseed Spa.

Hot Air Balloon Rides

I also learned that the Temecula Valley is a place for sunrise hot balloon rides. I was lucky to catch a glimpse of several balloons floating effortlessly against a clear blue sky and snow-capped mountains. It’s worth checking for hotels that offer packages that include an early-morning hot air balloon ride. Guess I’ll just have to make a return trip to take a ride!

I mentioned earlier that I learned a few things while researching activities in the area. Besides the wine experiences, we discovered that taking the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner from San Diego is a stress-free way to travel. Two of my kids had previously taken the train and highly recommended it. It’s an easy way to get around as part of a Southern California weekend getaway.

The San Diego Santa Fe Depot was within walking distance of the Urban Boutique Hotel, our overnight stay in San Diego’s Little Italy neighborhood. We quickly settled in our comfortable business class seats upstairs for the short trip to San Juan Capistrano, enjoying water views plus food and drink service.

The Amtrak Pacific Surfliner will take you as far north as San Luis Obispo, including stops at Union Station in Los Angeles, and connecting bus service to other destinations in California.

Taking the train makes it easy to visit many of the charming Southern California beach towns without needing a rental car. Catching views of the Pacific Ocean flashing by outside the window was just what I needed after weeks of frigid weather back east.
