Enjoy a Dog-Friendly Getaway in Lewes, Delaware
If you are a dog owner, you probably are familiar with that look—the sad eyes when your dog sees your suitcase and waits patiently to see if you are going to invite them to go along. Our dog Hallie has gone on many day trips and hiking adventures with us, and was always hopeful when she saw a suitcase. And once or twice a year her wish would come true when we take her with us on an overnight adventure.
We combined a visit to see family with a stay at the dog-friendly Lazy L at Willow Creek in Lewes, Delaware. Just a few hours from the DC area, the Lazy L at Willow Creek is truly a hidden gem near the popular beach towns of Lewes and Rehoboth Beach. This was our third visit, and even though Hallie is no longer with us, we want to return with our newest dog, Tug.
If you are ready to enjoy a dog-friendly getaway in Lewes, Delaware, or just a relaxing weekend getaway, read on to see why we love the Lazy L at Willow Creek. Plus find a few things that we’ve learned from traveling with our dog.

Upon arrival to this 7-acre relaxing hideaway just off the coastal highway, you will find sweeping views of the coastal marsh & amazing outdoor space the property has to offer. For me, that’s what makes the Lazy L so special. If your goal is simply to relax outside and enjoy nature, you won’t be disappointed.
There’s the main, outdoor area with comfy couches surrounding a large fireplace, rocking chairs with a water view, lounge chairs perched on the edge of the water, two patio areas, and a funky, bright colored gathering area back in the woods. Or maybe you want to lounge by the pool or enjoy the hot tub with a water view.
Bird lovers will enjoy the variety of birds that frequent the property. On one trip, we saw a bald eagle, osprey, a blue heron swooping along the water, and tons of small birds feasting on the multiple bird feeders scattered around. Kayaks are available to rent from the on-site dock if you want to head out on Old Mill Creek, just be sure to keep an eye on the changing tides.
And don’t miss the opportunity to view a colorful sunrise! Even though we had an amazing view of the morning sky from our room, we did head out to view the beautiful pink and purple colors as the sun came up.
The house itself has 5 bedrooms available to reserve, each room with a private bath. We loved the Blue Heron room with its spectacular views of the creek and 2nd floor outside entrance. If you prefer a room on the ground floor, book one of the rooms with a patio entrance. The game room is also on this floor, and is currently open on a request-only basis.
No matter which room you stay in, be sure to check out the views from the top floor Author’s Loft. For more privacy, guests can book a stay in the Denver Cottage, which sits apart from the main house and has a pullout sofa in addition to the private bedroom.
Besides the amazing outdoor space, breakfast at the Lazy L is not to be missed. Since we last visited during the pandemic, we appreciated that each breakfast item was served in a colorful, mini casserole dish or a single-serving bowl, and each table had its own coffee carafe with cream and sugar. Breakfast choices at the time included favorites & original creations, like creme brulee french toast, individual omelettes, potatoes, fresh fruit, and fresh-baked pastries.

The inn is closed for several months over the winter, but it’s never too early to start planning for a spring getaway to the Lazy L at Willow Creek!
So what else is there to do in the area when you have had your fill of relaxing on the property? Between Lewes and nearby Rehoboth you won’t be bored! During the warm months, there’s a variety of nearby beaches (each with different rules about dogs, particularly in the summer).
Know that the area is quite popular in the summer, so expect crowds. Cape Henlopen State Park in Lewes is a favorite beach area, but dogs aren’t allowed on the swimming beach in-season. Nearby Broadkill Beach does allow dogs year-round. Here’s a good site to get the latest regulations regarding dogs on the beach.

Downtown Lewes is a great place for strolling, with several blocks of small shops. Pick up Italian baked goods from Touch of Italy or stop for a treat at King’s Ice Cream, then stroll over to see the Lightship Overfalls, a designated National Historic Landmark. Tours and the museum are open seasonally. The area is perfect to capture some amazing photos like this one.
For a change of scenery, make the short drive from Lewes to Prime Hook Wildlife Refuge for a nature hike. Just be sure to bring bug spray. And if you enjoy craft beer, don’t miss the Dogfish Head Craft Brewery in nearby Milton. Check the website for the latest hours for the Tasting Room & Kitchen. It currently offers indoor and outdoor seating. Both of these spots are dog-friendly.
As far as lunch and dinner, Lewes and nearby Rehoboth Beach have a variety of restaurants that fit every budget and taste. It’s a pretty dog friendly area, and many outdoor patios welcome leashed pets. The Crooked Hammock Brewery, with its large backyard, and the Big Oyster Brewery are two local favorites in Lewes. Check out the Station on Kings, a combination bakery, café, and cute home and garden shop to grab a sandwich or coffee.
For the best crab cake around, take a drive down Route 1 to Woody’s Dewey Beach Bar & Grill. Expect crowds and parking can be tough, but it’s worth it for one of their highly acclaimed crab cakes. Craving pizza? Nearby Grotto Pizza, a Delaware classic since 1960, will deliver so you can enjoy a relaxing outdoor dining experience with a view! For a farm fresh ice cream experience, take the short drive to Hopkins Farm Creamery.

—>In the car, it’s safest to use some sort of harness system, especially for a long drive. We tried a new seat-belt restraint with a harness, and, despite the short lead, she managed to tangle herself even as she was lying on her bed. But eventually she got used to it. Our current dog prefers the security of a portable crate.
—>Be sure to bring extra water & dog poop bags. Keep a clean, portable dog bowl handy for the car and roadside stops.
—>Bring a favorite blanket or dog bed. Having a familiar smell can go a long way to making your dog feel more comfortable in the car or at your accommodations.
—>If you dog isn’t used to the car, take a few short trips before you head out on a long drive. Having heavy duty floor mats in the car has made it easier for us to clean up accidents!
—>When staying with other guests, expect your dog to be a bit anxious about people “in your house.” Know the limits of your dog as far as interacting with unfamiliar dogs, especially in common areas inside like stairwells and doorways. Our dog enjoyed some play time with new friends in the dog run, but not all dogs do well in these situations.
—>Planning ahead is important for dining out. Research dog-friendly outdoor patio options before you go.
